Breakfast of Champions

Breakfast of Champions follows Kilgore Trout and Dwayne Hoover through the events leading up to and following Hoover’s descent into madness. The reading experience felt like a slow-motion trainwreck, but in the best sense possible. As a piece of meta-fiction, the big set pieces are laid out very early in the book, which combined with the writing style was very engaging.

And the writing style is in particular something to highlight. There was a playfulness and lightness to it, which was highly amusing given the seriousness of some of the involved topics. Among my favorite segments were the odd tangents, tombstones and Trout’s monologues. And so on.
