The Long Way
Bernard Moitessier, The Long Way (da. Den lang vej). 978-87-553-1334-7
Another travel book which I read in preparation for a trip. More focused on sailing than Wind, Sand and Stars, but also more grounded. For example, when discussing the topic how human's reliance on technology, Moitessier beautifully recounts navigation the Mediterranean using only the stars and the movement of the waves – no compass.
Bernard Moitessier was an interesting character. I was under the impression that he never wished to participate in the Golden Globe race, but in The Long Way, he definitely seems focused on the competition and project. Only when he returns to the Atlantic does he finally reject, not the race, but life in the West and continue on to Tahiti.
Unfortunately, while the beginning of the book delivers on sailing and adventure, the post-Pacific part is rambling and almost rushed at times. A solo non-stop circumnavigation takes its toll.
Note: I read the Danish translation.
