Life is full of routines and rituals. One such ritual is what we cook when we are on our own. From rudimentary breakfast to an extra cup of coffee, there is a wide array of not-that-interesting meals. Det var ikke planen at købe kålroer tells a slife of life story through a series of recipes and anecdotes and monologues.
It is an amazing concept, taken to its extreme. Imagine any of the du-jour cooking blogs which spends a good portion on telling a slice of life story as a preamble to a daahl recipe. Kålroer is that, but as an actual novel. Further, the recipes are so ordinary and mundane that it completely subverts any expectation for inspiration. It is farcical in the best way possible.
Unfortunately, the actual novel is too mundane to my taste, but the book is worth reading simply for the concept alone.
